The Potter’s Road
Episode 8 – The Market of Mirrors
“When purpose is lost to pride, even beauty becomes a burden.”
The following month brought an unexpected invitation. A local art guild was organizing a grand exhibition in the city — a celebration of traditional craftsmanship. The invitation bore Amos’s name in elegant script.
Damilare’s eyes gleamed with excitement as he read it aloud. “Baba, they finally see your worth! We must go. This is the chance to show your work beyond the village.”
Amos smiled, though quietly. “The Potter lifts a vessel when it’s ready to serve, not to shine.”
Still, at Ruth’s urging, they prepared a small collection — ten pieces, each telling a story: The Waiting Clay, The Fire That Heals, The Vessel of Tears, and others. Damilare added one of his own — a bold design with intricate patterns.
When they arrived at the exhibition hall, they were dazzled. Polished glass, gleaming lights, and the scent of wealth filled the air. Artisans from across the region stood proudly by their creations.
“Welcome, Mr. Adewale!” said the curator, shaking Amos’s hand. “Your work carries a rustic charm. Very… authentic.”
As Amos arranged his pots, Damilare’s attention was drawn to a nearby stall. Another potter displayed sleek, machine-polished ceramics that gleamed like marble. The crowd gravitated there. Cameras flashed. Compliments flowed.
Damilare’s chest tightened. He turned to his father. “Baba, maybe we should try that style next time. Look how they love it.”
Amos simply smiled. “A mirror can reflect light, but only a vessel can carry it.”
But the words didn’t rest easily in Damilare’s heart. When a journalist stopped by, she ignored his piece entirely, praising only Amos’s “humble originality.” Damilare forced a smile, but inside, something stirred — an old ache for recognition.
That evening, as they packed up, he caught his reflection in one of the mirrored displays. The lights shimmered around him, and for a fleeting moment, he imagined his own name on banners, his work on magazine covers.
He didn’t notice Amos watching from a distance, eyes filled with quiet understanding.
On the journey home, Amos spoke softly. “Son, the world’s mirrors show you what you could be without God. But the Potter’s wheel shows you who you are becoming through Him.”
Damilare looked away, wrestling with both pride and shame.
Later that night, he couldn’t sleep. He walked into the workshop, lit a lantern, and stared at his unfinished clay piece. His hands trembled — not with ambition, but with longing.
He whispered, “Lord… help me want Your glory more than mine.”
The next morning, when Amos found him at the wheel, Damilare’s face was streaked with clay and tears. Amos said nothing — he just placed a gentle hand on his shoulder.
In the silence, the Potter’s work continued — not just in clay, but in hearts.
