Episode 3: The Temptation of the Spotlight

When Love Sings His Praise –

Episode 3: The Temptation of the Spotlight

The Festival of Worship had ended, but its echoes lingered on campus. Deborah and I became inseparable in ministry. Our voices blended like fire and water—different, yet strangely one. Invitations began pouring in for us to sing at fellowships and revivals across the university.

But with every open door came hidden snares.

That week, a lady named Cynthia—slender, stylish, with a smile that disarmed—began to linger after choir rehearsals. She was a soprano, well admired, and her eyes seemed to follow me wherever I went.

One evening, she cornered me after rehearsal.
“David,” she whispered, her perfume heavy in the humid air, “why do you waste your time with Deborah? You and I could take this music higher. Don’t you see? You have the gift. I have the connections. Together, we could own the stage.”

My heart pounded. She wasn’t just offering friendship. She was offering fame. A fast lane out of Oke-Odo village and my mother’s poverty.

I forced a smile. “Cynthia, the stage is nothing without the altar. I sing for One audience alone.”

Her lips tightened. “Then you’ll watch opportunities slip by while Deborah’s rich father buys her way into the spotlight.”

Her words stung like poison. Was she right? Was I just a steppingstone in Deborah’s world of privilege?

That night, I could not sleep. I turned to my old guitar and strummed softly, praying with trembling lips:
“Lord, deliver me from every snare. If this love is from You, guard it with fire. If it is not, burn it away before it destroys me.”

Across town, Deborah knelt beside her bed, battling a different storm. Her mother had once again warned her sternly:
“You will not marry a pauper, Deborah. The Williams name cannot be dragged into the mud.”

Tears slipped down her cheeks as she whispered:
“Father, let Your will be done. Not my mother’s, not even my own—but Yours alone.”

Two hearts. Two battles.
One destiny at stake.

Would the light of our love outshine the glitter of temptation, or would the world’s voice drown out God’s whisper?

The test had only just begun.

📖 Scripture to Reflect On: “No temptation has overtaken you except what is common to mankind. And God is faithful; He will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, He will also provide a way out so that you can endure it.” – 1 Corinthians 10:13

🙏 Prayer: “Lord, when the spotlight of the world tempts me, help me choose the light of Your will. Deliver me from snares dressed as opportunities. Keep me faithful to You and to my divine assignment.”

When Love Sings His Praise – Episode 2: The Clash of Worlds ✨

When Love Sings His Praise –

Episode 2: The Clash of Worlds

If the first song was a whisper from heaven, the second was a shout from the world.

News of our duet spread quickly across campus. Students whispered in corridors:
“Deborah Williams and David Adeoye? Together?”
“Impossible. She’s from the high places. He’s from the mud.”
Some laughed. Some frowned. A few prayed.

But not everyone was pleased.

Deborah’s friends—daughters of senators, ministers, and business tycoons—watched her closely.
“Debbie, why him?” one asked sharply. “There are sons of governors on this campus. Even the choir president’s father owns three radio stations. But you choose a boy with a broken guitar?”

Deborah only smiled. “It’s not the guitar that moves me—it’s the God who plays through him.”

Still, the pressure mounted.

One evening after rehearsal, as rain drummed hard against the chapel roof, a sleek black SUV waited outside. The tinted window slid down, and there sat Madam Grace Williams—Deborah’s mother.

“Get in,” she ordered.

The ride was silent at first. Deborah’s palms trembled against her lap. Finally, her mother spoke.
“Deborah, I heard rumors. Tell me they’re lies.”

“Which rumors, Mother?”

“That my daughter—the heir to the Williams legacy—is… fraternizing with the son of a roadside widow?” Her voice dripped with disdain. “Deborah, people like him will only stain our name. End it before it begins.”

Deborah swallowed hard. Her mother’s words were sharp, but her spirit felt a fire that refused to die.
“Mother,” she whispered, “I believe this is not about class. It is about calling.”

Grace Williams snapped her fan shut. “Calling? Don’t be foolish. You have been set apart for influence, not for pity. Do you know how many families dream of linking with us? And you… you are choosing ruin.”

Tears burned Deborah’s eyes. But she remembered the way the choir director trembled at rehearsal. She remembered the peace that covered her when their voices joined. She remembered Psalm 37:23.

Later that night, she fell on her knees in her dorm room.
“Lord,” she prayed, “if this is You, strengthen me. But if it’s not, break my heart now before it breaks later.”

Meanwhile, across town, I sat with my widowed mother in our leaking roof house. She wiped sweat from her brow with her wrapper and asked, almost casually:
“David… what is this I hear about you and the oil man’s daughter?”

I froze. “Mama, it’s nothing yet. We only sing.”

She looked at me with eyes both weary and wise.
“My son, you must know—when fire meets water, one must bow. Which will it be for you?”

Her words struck deep. Could our love survive the clash of worlds?

📖 Scripture to Reflect On: “For what fellowship has righteousness with lawlessness? And what communion has light with darkness?” – 2 Corinthians 6:14

🙏 Prayer: “Lord, give me the courage to obey You above men. Help me stand firm even when the world says it is impossible.”

✨  Episode 2: The Clash of Worlds cont'd. ✨

…My mother’s words struck deep. Could our love survive the clash of worlds?

I thought the night would end with that heavy question, but another storm was already gathering.

As I stepped out of the chapel after a late-night practice, someone called softly behind me.

“David…”

I turned. It was Anita—the soprano who had admired me quietly for months. She leaned against the doorframe, her eyes shining with something between pity and desire.

“I heard what Chief Williams’ wife said to Deborah today,” she whispered. “Everyone knows it won’t last. Why set yourself up for heartbreak?”

I tried to brush past her, but she moved closer, her perfume thick in the air.
“David,” she said, almost pleading, “you don’t have to fight so hard. You could have someone who truly understands your world. Someone like… me.”

For a split second, loneliness stabbed me. Anita’s words sounded easier, safer, less costly. But deep in my spirit, a verse thundered:

“Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.” – James 4:7

I stepped back, clutching my guitar to my chest like a shield.
“Anita,” I said firmly, “my heart is already taken—by Christ, and by His will. Please, don’t try to pull me away.”

Her face hardened.
“One day, David,” she said bitterly, “you’ll wish you chose differently.”

She turned sharply and disappeared into the night.

I stood there trembling, not from her words, but from the war I knew had just begun.

Two storms now raged against me—family opposition and the lure of temptation.
And this was only the beginning.

📖 Scripture to Reflect On: “Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil walks about like a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour.” – 1 Peter 5:8

🙏 Prayer: “Father, strengthen me to resist every temptation that seeks to draw me away from Your will. Let my love be anchored in You, not in circumstances.”

When Love Sings His Praise – Episode 1: The First Song

When Love Sings His Praise – Episode 1: The First Song

I still remember that day as if it were yesterday.
The Chapel was alive with movement—voices warming up, instruments being tuned, and the sweet, damp scent of rain drifting in through the open windows. It was rehearsal for the Festival of Worship, the biggest event on campus.

I sat in the far corner with my old, scratched guitar—my only inheritance from my late father. Its wooden frame bore scars of age, but every note carried my prayers like incense.

Then she walked in.

Her presence shifted the atmosphere. Not because she was Deborah Williams—the daughter of Chief Williams, the oil magnate every newspaper in Nigeria spoke of—but because when she opened her mouth to sing, heaven leaned closer.

Whispers rippled through the choir:
“Is that Deborah Williams? The Chief’s daughter?”
“What’s she doing here?”
“She could have gone abroad for music. Why join us?”

I strummed the opening chords of “As the Deer Pants for the Water.”
Her voice rose to meet mine. Soft. Pure. Powerful.

The choir director froze mid-motion. His baton slipped from his hand. He lifted both arms slowly, almost trembling, and whispered:
“Brethren… the Spirit has joined them.”

Silence. Then awe. Even the rain outside seemed to pause and listen.

Deborah’s eyes met mine across the room.
For a moment, everything else faded—the choir, the murmurs, even the weight of my poverty. It was just her voice, my strings, and God’s presence weaving them together.

My heart thudded in fear and wonder.
“Lord,” I whispered silently, “if this is You, let not my heart be deceived. But if this is flesh, cut it off before it grows.”

Yet something stirred within me. Not mere attraction. Not just music. It was deeper. A divine assignment waiting to unfold.

Still, one question thundered in my soul:
Could the daughter of wealth ever walk the same road as the son of a widow from Oke-Odo village?

The notes of worship rose higher, but so did the storm of questions in my heart.
