When Love Sings His Praise – Episode 1: The First Song
✨ When Love Sings His Praise – Episode 1: The First Song ✨
I still remember that day as if it were yesterday.
The Chapel was alive with movement—voices warming up, instruments being tuned, and the sweet, damp scent of rain drifting in through the open windows. It was rehearsal for the Festival of Worship, the biggest event on campus.
I sat in the far corner with my old, scratched guitar—my only inheritance from my late father. Its wooden frame bore scars of age, but every note carried my prayers like incense.
Then she walked in.
Her presence shifted the atmosphere. Not because she was Deborah Williams—the daughter of Chief Williams, the oil magnate every newspaper in Nigeria spoke of—but because when she opened her mouth to sing, heaven leaned closer.
Whispers rippled through the choir:
“Is that Deborah Williams? The Chief’s daughter?”
“What’s she doing here?”
“She could have gone abroad for music. Why join us?”
I strummed the opening chords of “As the Deer Pants for the Water.”
Her voice rose to meet mine. Soft. Pure. Powerful.
The choir director froze mid-motion. His baton slipped from his hand. He lifted both arms slowly, almost trembling, and whispered:
“Brethren… the Spirit has joined them.”
Silence. Then awe. Even the rain outside seemed to pause and listen.
Deborah’s eyes met mine across the room.
For a moment, everything else faded—the choir, the murmurs, even the weight of my poverty. It was just her voice, my strings, and God’s presence weaving them together.
My heart thudded in fear and wonder.
“Lord,” I whispered silently, “if this is You, let not my heart be deceived. But if this is flesh, cut it off before it grows.”
Yet something stirred within me. Not mere attraction. Not just music. It was deeper. A divine assignment waiting to unfold.
Still, one question thundered in my soul:
Could the daughter of wealth ever walk the same road as the son of a widow from Oke-Odo village?
The notes of worship rose higher, but so did the storm of questions in my heart.
