✨ When Love Sings His Praise –
Episode 3: The Temptation of the Spotlight ✨
The Festival of Worship had ended, but its echoes lingered on campus. Deborah and I became inseparable in ministry. Our voices blended like fire and water—different, yet strangely one. Invitations began pouring in for us to sing at fellowships and revivals across the university.
But with every open door came hidden snares.
That week, a lady named Cynthia—slender, stylish, with a smile that disarmed—began to linger after choir rehearsals. She was a soprano, well admired, and her eyes seemed to follow me wherever I went.
One evening, she cornered me after rehearsal.
“David,” she whispered, her perfume heavy in the humid air, “why do you waste your time with Deborah? You and I could take this music higher. Don’t you see? You have the gift. I have the connections. Together, we could own the stage.”
My heart pounded. She wasn’t just offering friendship. She was offering fame. A fast lane out of Oke-Odo village and my mother’s poverty.
I forced a smile. “Cynthia, the stage is nothing without the altar. I sing for One audience alone.”
Her lips tightened. “Then you’ll watch opportunities slip by while Deborah’s rich father buys her way into the spotlight.”
Her words stung like poison. Was she right? Was I just a steppingstone in Deborah’s world of privilege?
That night, I could not sleep. I turned to my old guitar and strummed softly, praying with trembling lips:
“Lord, deliver me from every snare. If this love is from You, guard it with fire. If it is not, burn it away before it destroys me.”
Across town, Deborah knelt beside her bed, battling a different storm. Her mother had once again warned her sternly:
“You will not marry a pauper, Deborah. The Williams name cannot be dragged into the mud.”
Tears slipped down her cheeks as she whispered:
“Father, let Your will be done. Not my mother’s, not even my own—but Yours alone.”
Two hearts. Two battles.
One destiny at stake.
Would the light of our love outshine the glitter of temptation, or would the world’s voice drown out God’s whisper?
The test had only just begun.
📖 Scripture to Reflect On: “No temptation has overtaken you except what is common to mankind. And God is faithful; He will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, He will also provide a way out so that you can endure it.” – 1 Corinthians 10:13
🙏 Prayer: “Lord, when the spotlight of the world tempts me, help me choose the light of Your will. Deliver me from snares dressed as opportunities. Keep me faithful to You and to my divine assignment.”
