Our Citizenship Is in Heaven
Sincere Milk Devotional – August 22
Series Theme: Joyful Living in Christ: Lessons from Philippians
Theme: Our Citizenship Is in Heaven
Scripture: Philippians 3:17–21 (NKJV)
“For our citizenship is in heaven, from which we also eagerly wait for the Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ.” — Philippians 3:20
Reflection
Paul has just encouraged the Philippians to press forward toward the goal. Now he reminds them of where they ultimately belong.
Paul says, “Our citizenship is in heaven.”
For the Philippians, this statement would have carried particular significance. Philippi was a Roman colony, and its citizens were proud of their Roman identity even though they lived far from Rome. Their citizenship shaped their culture, values, loyalties, and way of life.
Paul uses this familiar idea to teach a profound spiritual truth:
As followers of Christ, our ultimate identity is not determined by the country in which we live but by the kingdom to which we belong.
We may have earthly citizenship, nationality, language, culture, careers, families, and communities. These things matter. But none of them is our ultimate identity.
We belong to Christ.
And because our citizenship is in heaven, our lives on earth should reflect the values of our heavenly King.
This means that our faith should influence the way we speak, spend money, treat people, respond to injustice, handle conflict, raise our families, and conduct ourselves when nobody is watching.
Paul also warns about those “whose end is destruction, whose god is their belly, and whose glory is in their shame—who set their mind on earthly things.”
The problem is not simply that they live on earth. The problem is that earthly things have become the center of their lives.
That warning is relevant to us.
It is possible to be so consumed by money, comfort, success, possessions, pleasure, status, or recognition that we forget eternity.
Earthly things are temporary.
Heavenly citizenship is eternal.
Paul then points our attention to the return of Christ. We are “eagerly” waiting for our Savior, who will transform our lowly bodies to be like His glorious body.
This is our Christian hope.
We are not simply waiting for life to become easier. We are waiting for Jesus.
And when He comes, He will complete what He has begun.
The Christian life therefore has both a present identity and a future hope.
We live here, but we belong there.
We work here, but our ultimate reward is with Him.
We face struggles here, but our final destiny is with Christ.
This heavenly perspective changes how we live today.
When we know where we belong, we don't have to desperately find our identity in temporary things.
When we know where we are going, we can endure difficult seasons without losing hope.
When we know Christ is coming again, we can remain faithful even when the world around us is moving in another direction.
So today, ask yourself:
Does my life look like someone whose citizenship is in heaven?
Application
- Remember that your deepest identity is found in Christ, not in earthly status.
- Let your heavenly citizenship shape your choices and relationships.
- Do not allow temporary possessions or achievements to become the center of your life.
- Keep your eyes on Christ and live with the expectation of His return.
Prayer
Heavenly Father, thank You that through Jesus Christ I belong to Your kingdom. Help me not to become so attached to temporary things that I lose sight of eternity. Let my words, decisions, relationships, and priorities reflect the values of heaven. Give me strength to remain faithful in this world while eagerly looking forward to the return of Jesus. May my life point others toward my true home with You. In Jesus' name, Amen.
Last Thought for the Day
“You may live on earth, but if you belong to Christ, heaven is your true home. Live today in a way that reflects where you ultimately belong.”
Midnight Reflection – August 22
Theme: Remember Where You Belong
Scripture: Philippians 3:20
“For our citizenship is in heaven, from which we also eagerly wait for the Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ.”
Reflection
As you prepare to sleep tonight, think about how easily earthly concerns can consume our attention.
Bills.
Work.
Family responsibilities.
Plans for the future.
Success and failure.
The things we see and experience every day can sometimes feel like the whole of reality.
But Paul reminds us to lift our eyes higher.
You belong to Christ.
Your present circumstances are not your final destination.
Your current struggles are not your permanent condition.
Your earthly achievements are not your ultimate measure.
And your disappointments do not have the final word.
Jesus is coming again.
One day, the brokenness we experience in this world will give way to the fullness of His kingdom. The Savior who redeemed us will also complete His transforming work in us.
Tonight, therefore, don't allow today's problems to become bigger than your eternal hope.
You can rest because your future is secure in Christ.
Whatever tomorrow brings, remember where you belong.
Night Prayer
Father, thank You that my citizenship is in heaven and that my future is secure in Christ. Help me to release the worries of today and not allow temporary problems to steal my eternal hope. Keep my heart focused on Jesus and give me grace to live faithfully while I wait for His return. Watch over me tonight and give me peaceful rest. In Jesus' name, Amen.
Midnight Thought
“This world is where you journey, not where you ultimately belong. Rest tonight with your eyes on Christ and your heart anchored in eternity.”
