Where Is Your Confidence?
Sincere Milk Devotional – August 19
Series Theme: Joyful Living in Christ: Lessons from Philippians
Theme: Where Is Your Confidence?
Scripture: Philippians 3:2–7 (NKJV)
“For we are the circumcision, who worship God in the Spirit, rejoice in Christ Jesus, and have no confidence in the flesh.” — Philippians 3:3
Reflection
As Paul continues into Philippians 3, his tone becomes more serious. He warns the believers against putting their confidence in religious credentials, human achievement, or outward performance.
Paul understood this danger personally.
If anyone could have relied on religious accomplishments, it was Paul. He had an impressive background: he was circumcised according to Jewish law, from the nation of Israel, from the tribe of Benjamin, a Hebrew, a Pharisee, and, according to his former understanding of righteousness, blameless in keeping the law.
By human standards, Paul had an impressive spiritual résumé.
But then he encountered Christ.
And everything changed.
Paul came to understand that the things he once considered reasons for confidence were incapable of giving him true righteousness before God. His religious credentials could not save him. His heritage could not save him. His zeal could not save him.
Only Christ could.
This is one of the most important lessons in the Christian life:
Good things can become dangerous when we trust them more than we trust Christ.
Our church attendance cannot save us.
Our ministry position cannot save us.
Our generosity cannot save us.
Our knowledge of Scripture cannot save us.
Even our religious heritage cannot save us.
These things may be valuable, but none of them can replace a personal relationship with Jesus Christ.
Paul eventually regarded his former grounds for boasting as loss for Christ. He discovered that knowing Jesus was infinitely more valuable than everything he had previously considered important.
This challenges us to examine where our confidence lies.
Perhaps we secretly find our identity in our education, career, family background, financial success, ministry achievements, reputation, or even how much we know about the Bible.
But the gospel brings us to one foundation:
Christ alone.
Our righteousness does not come from what we have achieved for God but from what God has accomplished for us through Christ.
This does not make our good works meaningless. Rather, it puts them in their proper place. We don't serve God to become accepted; we serve because, through Christ, we have already been accepted by grace.
Today, ask yourself honestly:
“If everything I am proud of were taken away, would Christ still be enough for me?”
That is where true spiritual security begins.
Application
- Examine what you are tempted to use as a source of spiritual confidence.
- Thank God that your salvation rests on Christ rather than your performance.
- Do good works from gratitude, not from a desire to earn God's acceptance.
- Let your greatest boast be what Christ has done, not what you have accomplished.
Prayer
Heavenly Father, thank You that my salvation does not depend on my achievements, reputation, background, or religious performance. Forgive me for the times I have placed confidence in myself instead of Christ. Teach me to rejoice in Jesus alone and to rest completely in His grace. May everything I accomplish be an expression of gratitude rather than an attempt to earn Your approval. In Jesus' name, Amen.
Last Thought for the Day
“Everything you accomplish may be valuable, but nothing is more valuable than knowing Christ. Build your confidence on Him, because everything else can change.”
Midnight Reflection – August 19
Theme: When Everything Else Falls Away
Scripture: Philippians 3:7
“But what things were gain to me, these I have counted loss for Christ.”
Reflection
As tonight comes, take a moment to consider what you have been relying on.
Achievements?
Money?
Education?
Reputation?
Relationships?
Recognition?
Even good things can quietly become substitutes for God when we begin to place our security in them.
Paul had many things he could have boasted about, yet he discovered that none of them compared with Christ.
Tonight, imagine that everything you have achieved was suddenly stripped away.
Would you still have peace?
Would you still know who you are?
The gospel says yes—because your deepest identity is not found in what you possess or accomplish.
You belong to Christ.
That is enough.
Your achievements can change.
Your circumstances can change.
People can change.
But Christ remains.
So tonight, release the pressure to prove yourself.
You don't have to impress God.
You don't have to earn His love.
You don't have to compete with anyone.
Rest in the finished work of Jesus.
Night Prayer
Lord Jesus, You are more valuable than everything this world can offer. Forgive me for the times I have placed my confidence in temporary things. Teach me to treasure You above achievement, recognition, wealth, and status. Let my heart rest in Your grace tonight. Remind me that because I belong to You, I have nothing to prove and nothing to fear. In Jesus' name, Amen.
Midnight Thought
“When Christ becomes your greatest treasure, you no longer need the world to prove your worth.”
