Episode 10 – The Silence Before the Song
The days that followed Uncle Bode’s rejection were a blur of fear and exhaustion. The hospital’s deadline expired. The doctors grew colder, reminding them that without the balance, the surgery could not proceed.
Mama’s condition worsened. Machines beeped frantically one night as nurses rushed in, their faces grave. David and Funke clung to each other outside the ward, helpless.
Funke’s anger boiled over.
“This is your fault, David! If you had swallowed your pride and taken Uncle Bode’s money, Mama would be safe! Your faith has killed her!”
Her words shattered him. He sank to the hospital floor, head buried in his hands. For the first time since the letter in the rain, doubt screamed louder than faith. Had he misunderstood God? Had he let foolish hope steal his mother’s last chance at life?
That night, David wandered the city streets aimlessly. Neon lights blurred through his tears. At one point, he stood on the edge of a bridge, staring into the dark waters below. His heart whispered, Maybe it’s better to end the waiting. Better to stop disappointing everyone.
But as the cold wind whipped his face, his wallet slipped from his pocket. The torn page of Isaiah fluttered out, landing at his feet. The words caught his eyes in the dim light:
“When you pass through the waters, I will be with you;
and when you pass through the rivers, they will not sweep over you.”
David sank to his knees, clutching the paper to his chest. The river raged below, but the promise raged louder in his soul.
“No, Lord,” he sobbed. “Even here… I won’t let go.”
The night gave no miracle. The sky gave no sign. But something unseen held him back from the edge. He walked home with weary steps, unaware that even as he cried in the dark, heaven was already moving pieces into place.
By morning, news would come—news he could not imagine, news that would change everything.
But for now, there was only silence. The silence before the song.
