Episode 21 – When the War Comes Home
Faith Under Fire
The night was unusually still. Even the crickets outside Mama’s window seemed to have fallen silent. David sat by the kerosene lamp, writing notes from his last sermon. He had just closed his Bible when a sharp knock came.
“Mama!” a voice shouted from outside. “Come quick! The barn is on fire!”
David rushed out barefoot. The air reeked of smoke. Flames licked at the night sky as villagers tried to douse the blaze. That barn stored their crops—their only source of income.
By dawn, nothing was left but ash.
Mama sank to her knees, tears streaming down her face. “Oh God, after all our prayers… after all we’ve done for You…”
David stood speechless. He had faced ridicule, temptation, even spiritual battles—but nothing like this. The loss cut deeper because it touched the one person who had prayed him into faith.
That night, he couldn’t sleep. He walked behind the house and fell on his knees.
“Lord,” he whispered, “I thought serving You would shield us from harm. Why this? Why now?”
The silence stretched long—until the Spirit whispered deep within:
“The enemy attacks what he fears. Do not mourn the ashes; I will build something eternal.”
The next day, something strange happened. As neighbors came to comfort them, many confessed that the fire had shaken them—but also awakened them. One said, “We’ve seen your faith, even in loss. If your God is real in pain, then we want to know Him.”
That evening, under the open sky where the barn once stood, David preached again—this time not from confidence, but from surrender. And as he spoke, hearts turned, tears flowed, and a new kind of fire fell—not of destruction, but of revival.
Mama stood behind him, smiling through her tears. “The devil burned the barn,” she said quietly, “but God built an altar.”
