Episode 8 – Shadows After the Light

The partial payment had been a miracle. David clung to it like a lifeline. But by the third day, the hospital’s demand for the balance returned heavier than before. The deadline was firm: three more days, or the surgery would be canceled.

Funke’s patience snapped. She cornered David outside the ward, her voice rising.
“Brother, enough of this waiting! Whoever paid the first part is gone now. We need real money, not miracles! I’ve decided—I’ll call Uncle Bode.”

David flinched. Uncle Bode—the relative no one spoke of openly. A wealthy man, yes, but his riches had come through occult dealings, whispered sacrifices, and shadowy favors. Accepting his help meant tying their family to debts no one could repay.

“Funke, no,” David pleaded. “That’s not the way. God is not finished—”

“God?” she spat, her eyes blazing. “Where is He, David? Where was He when Mama collapsed? Where is He now? Your faith is killing her!”

Her words struck like knives. For the first time since the mysterious payment, doubt clawed back into his chest. Was he being foolish? Was his stubborn trust a slow poison to the very mother he wanted to save?

That night, as he sat alone in the chapel, his mind swirled. The quiet mockery of Kunle’s offer, the sharp sting of Funke’s accusation, the looming shadow of Uncle Bode—they pressed down on him like chains.

He opened his Bible, desperate for comfort, and his eyes fell on these words:

“Do not be afraid of sudden terror… for the Lord will be your confidence and will keep your foot from being caught.” —Proverbs 3:25–26

David clenched his fist. “Lord, I don’t see the way. But if this is another fire, then walk me through it. Don’t let me fall.”

The next morning brought no miracle. Instead, it brought tension. Funke arrived with news—Uncle Bode had agreed to meet them that evening. Her face bore a mix of relief and defiance.

David’s heart sank. Another choice loomed, darker than before: give in to desperation and take help from polluted hands… or stand firm, risking his mother’s life, believing God would act.

The clock ticked louder. The test had deepened.

And heaven, unseen, held its breath.
