The Potter’s Road

Episode 9 – The Potter’s Silence

“When Heaven seems quiet, the shaping continues beneath the surface.”

The weeks following the exhibition were strangely quiet. Orders dwindled, and even the neighbors who once visited often seemed distant. The small workshop that had glowed with warmth now felt still, like the pause between two heartbeats.

Damilare noticed it first. “Baba,” he said one morning, “it’s as if everyone has forgotten us.”

Amos kept shaping clay without looking up. “When the Potter works in silence, He’s perfecting what eyes can’t see.”

But Damilare’s faith was wearing thin. The echoes of the city still haunted him — the lights, the applause, the admiration. Now, all he heard was the squeak of the wheel and the sigh of clay.

One evening, frustration got the better of him. “Baba, we pray, we wait, we work… and yet nothing changes! How long must we stay small?”

Amos stopped the wheel. His hands rested on the soft clay — half-formed, trembling under his touch. “Son, what happens if I rush this pot?”

“It collapses,” Damilare said quietly.

“Exactly,” Amos whispered. “And what if I leave it too long in the cold?”

“It hardens before its time.”

Amos nodded slowly. “So it is with us. The silence is not neglect; it’s timing.”

That night, as Damilare lay in bed, his heart churned. He prayed, but Heaven felt distant. “God, are You still there?” he whispered.

No voice. No sign. Just stillness.

The next morning, he entered the workshop early, determined to work before his father awoke. But as he turned the wheel, the clay slipped and collapsed in his hands. Frustration surged — he struck the table, splattering mud everywhere.

Then, suddenly, a verse came to him — one his mother had read when he was a child:

“Be still, and know that I am God.” – Psalm 46:10

Tears welled up. He dropped to his knees, clay-stained and broken. “Teach me to wait, Lord… even when You’re silent.”

When Amos entered minutes later, he said nothing. He simply knelt beside his son, placed his hands on the ruined clay, and began reshaping it together with him.

The silence broke — not with sound, but with peace.
