Work Out What God Is Working In

Sincere Milk Devotional – August 13

Series Theme: Joyful Living in Christ: Lessons from Philippians

Theme: Work Out What God Is Working In

Scripture: Philippians 2:12–13 (NKJV)

“Work out your own salvation with fear and trembling; for it is God who works in you both to will and to do for His good pleasure.”

Reflection

Paul has just presented Jesus as the supreme example of humility and obedience. Now he turns to the practical question: How should believers respond to what Christ has done for them?

He tells the Philippians to “work out your own salvation with fear and trembling.”

Paul is not saying that we earn salvation through our works. Salvation is God's gift of grace through faith in Jesus Christ. We cannot work for our salvation; rather, we are called to work out the salvation God has already given us.

In other words, what God has planted within us should increasingly become visible through the way we live.

Faith should produce obedience.

Grace should produce transformation.

A changed heart should produce a changed life.

This is why Christianity cannot remain merely a profession of belief. The gospel should affect our character, relationships, priorities, decisions, and daily conduct.

Yet Paul immediately gives us encouragement: “For it is God who works in you.”

What a beautiful balance!

We are responsible for responding to God, but God Himself is working within us. He gives us both the desire and the ability to pursue His will.

Sometimes we look at the Christian life and become overwhelmed by how much growth is still needed. We see our weaknesses, habits, impatience, fears, and inconsistencies and wonder how we will ever become the people God wants us to be.

Philippians 2:13 reminds us that we are not doing this alone.

God is working in you.

He is changing your desires.
He is strengthening your obedience.
He is teaching you patience.
He is deepening your love.
He is shaping your character.
He is making you more like Christ.

Our responsibility is to cooperate with His work.

When God convicts you, respond.

When His Word corrects you, obey.

When the Spirit prompts you to forgive, forgive.

When God gives you an opportunity to serve, serve.

When you fall, repent and get back up.

Spiritual growth is often gradual. You may not notice the changes from one day to the next, but over time you will discover that God has been faithfully transforming you.

So do not become discouraged by the distance between where you are and where you want to be.

Keep walking. Keep obeying. Keep trusting.

God is still working in you.

Application

  • Take your spiritual growth seriously, knowing that God is at work in you.
  • Respond promptly when God's Word reveals an area that needs to change.
  • Don't become discouraged by slow progress; trust God's continuing work.
  • Ask yourself: “What is God asking me to obey today?”

Prayer

Heavenly Father, thank You for the salvation You have freely given me through Jesus Christ. Help me to live out the reality of that salvation every day. Work deeply within my heart, shaping my desires, thoughts, attitudes, and actions according to Your will. Give me the grace to obey You even when obedience is difficult. Thank You that I am not working alone—you are working in me for Your good pleasure. In Jesus' name, Amen.

Last Thought for the Day

“You are not responsible for finishing God's work in your own strength. Your responsibility is to faithfully respond while trusting the God who is working within you.”

Midnight Reflection – August 13

Theme: God Is Still Working in You

Scripture: Philippians 2:13

“For it is God who works in you both to will and to do for His good pleasure.”

Reflection

As you come to the end of another day, remember this simple but powerful truth:

God is still working in you.

Perhaps you look back at today and see things you wish you had done differently. Maybe you lost your patience, struggled with temptation, spoke too quickly, or failed to do something you knew you should have done.

Bring it all to God.

Your failures do not mean that God has abandoned His work. They are opportunities to return to His grace, learn, repent, and continue growing.

Sometimes we expect transformation to happen instantly. But God often works through a process—one decision, one act of obedience, one lesson, and one surrendered moment at a time.

Tonight, don't only ask, “How well did I do today?”

Ask also:

“What was God teaching me today?”

Perhaps He was teaching you patience through an irritating situation.

Perhaps humility through disappointment.

Perhaps compassion through someone's need.

Perhaps dependence through uncertainty.

Perhaps forgiveness through an offense.

Whatever today brought, God can use it to shape you.

Rest tonight knowing that the Master is still working on the masterpiece.

You may not yet be everything God intends you to become, but you are not where you once were.

And He is not finished.

Night Prayer

Father, thank You for faithfully working in me. Thank You that my weaknesses do not cause You to abandon me. Forgive my failures today and help me learn from them. Continue transforming my heart and give me the desire and strength to obey You. As I sleep tonight, help me to rest in Your grace rather than my performance. I trust You to complete the work You have begun in me. In Jesus' name, Amen.

Midnight Thought

“Do not despise the unfinished work of God in your life. The hands that began the work are still shaping you, even in the quietness of the night.”
