But God

October Series: Rooted in Christ
Day 7 — But God
📖 Ephesians 2:4–10
“But God, who is rich in mercy, because of His great love with which He loved us…” — Ephesians 2:4
REFLECTION
Two words can completely change a story:
But God.
Yesterday, Paul described humanity's condition apart from Christ. We were dead in trespasses and sins, walking according to the patterns of the world.
Then comes the turning point:
“But God…”
God did not leave us where sin found us.
Why?
Paul gives us three profound answers:
Because He is rich in mercy.
Because He has great love.
Because He is rich in grace.
God's response to our brokenness was not abandonment but mercy.
Paul says that God “made us alive together with Christ.”
Notice that this is not something we achieved.
We did not rescue ourselves.
We did not become good enough for God to accept us.
We were made alive with Christ.
Then Paul gives us one of the most quoted statements in the New Testament:
“For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God.”
Grace means that salvation is God's gift.
You cannot boast about a gift you did not earn.
This should humble us.
Whatever spiritual progress we have made, whatever ministry we are involved in, whatever good things we accomplish—we must never forget that everything begins with grace.
But Paul does not stop there.
Verse 10 says:
“For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works.”
Grace does not save us so that we can remain unchanged.
Grace saves us so that God can make something beautiful with our lives.
You are God's workmanship.
The Greek idea carries the sense of something crafted or created with purpose.
Your life is not meaningless.
God is still shaping you.
Your failures do not disqualify His ability to work through you. Your limitations do not frighten Him. Your past does not prevent Him from giving you a future.
You are saved by grace and created for purpose.
So today, don't ask only:
“What has God saved me from?”
Also ask:
“What is God creating me to become?”
Grace brought you out.
Purpose is calling you forward.
🌙 MIDNIGHT CRY — There Is Still More
Tonight, remember those two words:
But God.
When you think your failure is the end—
But God.
When you think your opportunity has passed—
But God.
When you think your weakness makes you unusable—
But God.
When you think your past has disqualified you—
But God.
God's grace is not merely about rescuing you from yesterday. It is also about preparing you for tomorrow.
You are God's workmanship.
That means God is not finished with you.
The unfinished areas of your life are not evidence of God's absence. They may simply be evidence that He is still working.
Don't despise the process.
The sculptor sees what the stone cannot yet see.
The potter sees what the clay has not yet become.
And God sees what His grace is shaping you into.
Tonight, surrender the unfinished parts of your life to Him.
MIDNIGHT CRY
Father, thank You that my story does not end with my failures. Thank You for Your mercy, Your love, and Your grace. Help me trust Your work in me even when I cannot see what You are creating. Make me the person You have called me to be, and use my life for Your purposes. In Jesus' name, Amen.
TODAY'S TRUTH
I am saved by grace, shaped by God, and created for a purpose.
🙏 PRAYER
Father, thank You for Your great mercy and immeasurable love. Thank You for saving me by grace through faith. Help me never to take Your grace for granted. Continue Your work in me and make my life useful for Your kingdom. Let my words, decisions, relationships, gifts, and actions become expressions of Your grace. In Jesus' name, Amen.
TODAY'S STEP
Ask yourself three questions:
- What has God's grace rescued me from?
- What is God currently changing in me?
- What good work might God be preparing me to do?
Write down your answers and pray over them.
🌙 TONIGHT'S DECLARATION
My past is not my final story. I am God's workmanship, and His grace is still writing my story.
🔥 ONE WORD FOR TODAY
GRACE
I did not earn it.
I cannot repay it.
I can only receive it—and live it.
