LOVE THAT HONOURS GOD

OCTOBER SERIES: ROOTED IN CHRIST

📅 DAY 19 — OCTOBER 19
LOVE THAT HONOURS GOD
📖 Bible Reading: Ephesians 5:22–33
Key Verse:
“Husbands, love your wives, even as Christ also loved the church, and gave himself for it.” — Ephesians 5:25 (KJV)
🌅 TODAY'S DEVOTIONAL
True love is not merely about what you receive; it is also about how faithfully you give.
Love is one of the most celebrated words in the world, yet it is often one of the most misunderstood. People speak of love in songs, poems, weddings, and everyday conversations. But what does love look like when it is tested by responsibility, disagreement, sacrifice, and the demands of daily life?
In Ephesians 5:22–33, Paul uses the relationship between husband and wife to illustrate profound truths about love, commitment, and Christ's relationship with the Church.
This passage has sometimes been approached only as a discussion of marital roles. Yet at its heart is a demanding picture of Christlike love—love that honours God, seeks the good of another, and takes responsibility seriously.
The quality of our love is revealed not only by what we say but also by how we treat those entrusted to our care.
1. BUILD YOUR RELATIONSHIPS ON REVERENCE FOR CHRIST
Paul introduces this section by calling believers to submit to one another out of reverence for Christ (Ephesians 5:21).
This provides an important foundation for understanding the instructions that follow.
Christian relationships are not meant to be governed by selfish ambition, competition, manipulation, or the desire to dominate. They should be shaped by our commitment to honour Jesus Christ.
In marriage, this means recognising that your spouse is not an opponent to defeat but a person to love, respect, and serve.
It means listening carefully, speaking honestly, accepting responsibility for mistakes, and seeking solutions that protect the dignity of both partners.
A relationship centred on Christ asks more than, “What do I deserve?” It also asks, “How can I honour God in the way I treat this person?”
2. LOVE THROUGH SACRIFICE, NOT SELFISHNESS
Paul gives husbands a remarkable standard:
“Husbands, love your wives, even as Christ also loved the church, and gave himself for it.” — Ephesians 5:25 (KJV)
Christ's love for the Church is sacrificial. He did not give Himself merely to gain admiration or establish His reputation. His love was expressed through self-giving for the good of those He came to redeem.
Husbands are therefore called to a love that goes far beyond providing material necessities or fulfilling public expectations.
It is a love expressed through faithfulness, tenderness, patience, responsibility, emotional presence, and practical care.
It means being willing to listen when your wife is distressed, sharing responsibilities, keeping promises, acknowledging wrongdoing, and considering her wellbeing when making decisions.
Such love does not use authority as an excuse for selfishness or control. Christlike love seeks the good of the other person.
This principle also challenges every believer to examine the quality of their love.
Do we love only when our needs are met? Do we become impatient when relationships require effort? Are we willing to serve when there is no applause or immediate reward?
Love becomes credible when it is demonstrated through consistent, selfless action.
3. RESPECT AND DIGNITY MATTER
Paul's instructions to wives include respect for their husbands, while his instructions to husbands emphasise sacrificial love.
These teachings should never be used to justify humiliation, coercion, violence, or the denial of another person's dignity.
The biblical picture of marriage must be read in light of Christ's character and the wider call to love, mutual responsibility, and service.
Respect does not require a person to call wrongdoing acceptable. Submission does not mean surrendering one's conscience, tolerating abuse, or abandoning personal safety.
Likewise, leadership within a Christian understanding of marriage must never become an excuse for domination.
A husband who claims spiritual authority but refuses to love sacrificially has failed to take Christ's example seriously. A marriage in which one partner is routinely intimidated or degraded is not displaying the self-giving love Paul describes.
God-honouring relationships require truthfulness, responsibility, care, and respect for the dignity of both people.
4. CARE FOR YOUR SPOUSE AS YOU CARE FOR YOURSELF
Paul explains that husbands should love their wives as their own bodies, nourishing and cherishing them.
This is a picture of attentive care.
We instinctively recognise our own needs for food, rest, comfort, protection, and encouragement. Paul challenges husbands to demonstrate comparable concern for their wives.
In practical terms, this means not ignoring your spouse's emotional needs, dismissing legitimate concerns, or assuming that financial provision alone is sufficient.
A healthy marriage needs communication, companionship, trust, tenderness, and a willingness to grow together.
It also requires humility. No spouse knows everything, gets everything right, or meets every need perfectly. Both partners must be willing to learn, apologise, forgive, and seek help when difficulties become overwhelming.
Love does not demand perfection. It calls for faithfulness and a sincere commitment to the good of the relationship.
5. LET CHRIST REMAIN THE MODEL OF LOVE
Paul concludes by connecting marriage with the relationship between Christ and the Church.
This reminds us that marriage is not simply a private arrangement or a social institution. For Christians, it can become a living testimony to the faithfulness, grace, and self-giving love of Christ.
But this passage also speaks to believers who are unmarried, widowed, separated, or navigating difficult relationships.
Its call to Christlike love is not limited to married people.
Every Christian can practise patience, respect, selflessness, faithfulness, and care in friendships, family relationships, ministry, and the wider community.
Perhaps today you need to become more attentive to your spouse. Perhaps you need to apologise for words spoken in anger. Perhaps you need to listen rather than defend yourself. Or perhaps you need to seek wise support because a relationship has become harmful.
Whatever your situation, remember that Christ calls His people to love in ways that honour truth, preserve dignity, and reflect His character.
Do not measure love merely by the strength of your feelings. Measure it also by the faithfulness of your actions.
🙏 PRAYER FOR TODAY
Heavenly Father, thank You for revealing Your love through Jesus Christ.
Teach me to love others with sincerity, patience, humility, and faithfulness. Deliver me from selfishness, pride, manipulation, and the desire to control others.
For those who are married, strengthen their relationships with mutual respect, honest communication, tenderness, and commitment. Help husbands to love sacrificially and wives to relate with wisdom and respect. Teach both partners to honour Christ in their decisions and daily interactions.
Heal relationships wounded by harsh words, neglect, betrayal, or unresolved conflict. Give those facing serious difficulties the courage to seek wise counsel and the protection they need.
Help me to recognise that genuine love requires more than words. Give me grace to listen carefully, apologise sincerely, forgive wisely, and serve without constantly seeking recognition.
For those who are unmarried, widowed, or experiencing loneliness, remind them that their worth and identity are secure in Your love. Help them to cultivate relationships marked by dignity, truth, and godliness.
May my life reflect the self-giving love of Jesus Christ.
In His mighty name. Amen.

🌙 SINCERE MILK — MIDNIGHT CRY
DAY 19: LORD, TEACH ME TO LOVE LIKE CHRIST!
📖 Scripture Focus: Ephesians 5:25–28
“Husbands, love your wives, even as Christ also loved the church, and gave himself for it.” — Ephesians 5:25 (KJV)
🌌 MIDNIGHT REFLECTION
Love is tested most deeply when it requires sacrifice, patience, humility, and responsibility.
It is easy to speak lovingly when everything is going well. It is more challenging to remain patient when misunderstandings arise, to listen when we feel criticised, or to show consideration when we are tired and preoccupied.
Yet these ordinary moments often reveal the true condition of our hearts.
In Ephesians 5, Paul directs husbands towards the example of Christ, whose love for the Church was expressed through self-giving sacrifice. This is a demanding standard because it challenges selfishness at its roots.
Christlike love does not ask only what another person can do for us. It considers how we can contribute to their wellbeing while remaining faithful to God's truth.
Tonight, examine your relationships honestly.
Have you neglected someone who needs your attention? Have you allowed pride to prevent you from apologising? Have you treated another person's concerns as unimportant because they inconvenience you?
If so, bring these matters before God.
Ask Him for the humility to acknowledge your failures and the courage to make appropriate changes.
For those who are married, remember that love is expressed in daily faithfulness: listening, sharing responsibilities, speaking respectfully, protecting trust, and showing care even when life becomes demanding.
For those who are unmarried, the call to love like Christ remains relevant. Your friendships, family relationships, ministry, and interactions with others are opportunities to practise selflessness and integrity.
And if you are experiencing pain in a relationship, remember that Christlike love does not require you to pretend that harm is acceptable. Seeking help, establishing boundaries, and protecting yourself from abuse can be necessary and wise.
Forgiveness and reconciliation are not always the same thing, and restored trust may require time, accountability, and genuine change.
Tonight, surrender your relationships to God. Ask Him to reveal where you need to grow, where healing is needed, and where wisdom must guide your next steps.
The goal is not simply to have relationships that look good before people, but to cultivate relationships that honour God and treat people with dignity.
May the love of Christ become increasingly visible in the way you speak, serve, forgive, and care for others.
