📅 DAY 16 — OCTOBER 16

SPEAKING LIFE, WALKING IN LOVE

📖 Bible Reading: Ephesians 4:25–32

Key Verse:

“Let no corrupt communication proceed out of your mouth, but that which is good to the use of edifying, that it may minister grace unto the hearers.” — Ephesians 4:29 (KJV)

🌅 TODAY'S DEVOTIONAL

Your words should reveal the new life Christ has given you.

Words are powerful. They can encourage a weary heart, restore hope to a discouraged soul, strengthen relationships, and inspire someone to keep going. Yet words can also wound deeply, destroy trust, spread bitterness, and leave scars that remain long after a conversation has ended.

As Paul continues his teaching in Ephesians 4:25–32, he shows us what the new life in Christ should look like in our everyday relationships. Having called believers to put off the old self and put on the new, he now addresses practical matters: honesty, anger, speech, work, forgiveness, and kindness.

His message reminds us that spiritual maturity is demonstrated not only in what we believe but also in how we treat people.

1. SPEAK THE TRUTH — EVEN WHEN IT IS DIFFICULT

Paul writes:

“Wherefore putting away lying, speak every man truth with his neighbour: for we are members one of another.” — Ephesians 4:25 (KJV)

Truthfulness is essential to Christian living. Dishonesty may appear convenient in the moment, but it gradually destroys trust and damages relationships.

As believers, we are called to be people whose words can be trusted. This means resisting exaggeration, refusing to manipulate facts, admitting our mistakes, and keeping our commitments.

Truthfulness also requires courage. Sometimes, telling the truth may cost us an advantage or expose our failures. Nevertheless, integrity means choosing what is right rather than what is convenient.

Because we belong to one another in Christ, our honesty should contribute to trust, unity, and peace.

2. DEAL WITH ANGER WITHOUT ALLOWING IT TO CONTROL YOU

Paul writes:

“Be ye angry, and sin not: let not the sun go down upon your wrath.” — Ephesians 4:26 (KJV)

Anger is a human emotion, but it must not become the master of our conduct.

There are situations in which anger alerts us to injustice, hurt, or wrongdoing. However, anger can become destructive when it leads to insults, revenge, hatred, intimidation, or prolonged resentment.

Paul urges believers to deal with anger rather than allowing it to take root.

This does not mean that every disagreement must be resolved before bedtime, regardless of circumstances. Some conflicts require time, wise counsel, appropriate boundaries, or further conversation. The principle is to avoid nurturing resentment and to pursue reconciliation as far as it is wise and possible.

Do not allow a temporary offence to become a permanent residence for bitterness.

3. USE YOUR WORDS TO BUILD, NOT DESTROY

Paul teaches that our speech should be appropriate for building others up and ministering grace to those who hear us.

Before you speak, consider the effect your words may have. Will they encourage or humiliate? Will they correct constructively or merely condemn? Will they bring clarity or create unnecessary confusion?

Speaking graciously does not mean avoiding difficult conversations. Sometimes love requires correction, and truth may challenge people. But even correction should be guided by wisdom, humility, and a genuine desire for what is good.

Our words should not become weapons for expressing every frustration or proving that we are right.

Instead, let us learn to speak with honesty, kindness, and self-control.

4. DO NOT GRIEVE THE HOLY SPIRIT

Paul reminds believers that they have been sealed by the Holy Spirit for the day of redemption.

This means our daily conduct matters in our relationship with God. We should not treat bitterness, malice, destructive speech, and unforgiveness as insignificant matters.

The Holy Spirit is at work in us, shaping us into the likeness of Christ. When we persist in attitudes contrary to God's character, we resist the transforming work He desires to accomplish in our lives.

Rather than becoming comfortable with sin, we should remain responsive to His correction and guidance.

5. CHOOSE KINDNESS AND FORGIVENESS

Paul concludes this passage with a beautiful instruction:

“And be ye kind one to another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, even as God for Christ's sake hath forgiven you.” — Ephesians 4:32 (KJV)

The standard for Christian forgiveness is the forgiveness we have received through Christ.

We did not earn God's forgiveness through our perfection. We received it because of His grace. In response, we are called to extend kindness and forgiveness to others.

Forgiveness does not mean pretending that wrongdoing never happened, denying pain, or abandoning appropriate boundaries. Where there has been serious harm, accountability and safety remain important. Reconciliation may also require repentance and a rebuilding of trust.

Nevertheless, we must not allow hatred and the desire for revenge to govern our hearts.

Dear friend, the world does not need more people who are skilled at finding faults, spreading rumours, or winning arguments at the expense of relationships. It needs people whose lives demonstrate the transforming grace of Jesus Christ.

Today, let your words carry grace. Let your anger be governed by wisdom. Let your heart remain tender before God. And where forgiveness is needed, ask Him for the strength to take the next faithful step.

You have received grace from Christ. Let your life become a channel through which others experience that grace.

🙏 PRAYER FOR TODAY

Heavenly Father, thank You for the transforming grace You have given me through Jesus Christ.

Forgive me for the times I have spoken carelessly, allowed anger to control me, or held on to bitterness. Search my heart and reveal every attitude that does not reflect Your character.

Set a guard over my mouth and help me to speak truthfully, wisely, and graciously. May my words encourage the discouraged, strengthen the weak, correct with humility, and bring peace wherever possible.

Lord, teach me to manage anger without falling into sin. Deliver me from malice, gossip, resentment, and the desire to retaliate when I am offended.

Holy Spirit, help me to remain sensitive to Your leading. Give me a tender heart, a forgiving spirit, and the courage to pursue peace without compromising truth or wisdom.

As You have forgiven me through Christ, empower me to extend kindness and forgiveness to others. Let my relationships, conversations, and daily conduct reflect the new life I have received.

May my words bring grace, my actions demonstrate love, and my life honour You.

In Jesus' mighty name. Amen.

💡 TODAY'S TRUTH

A transformed heart should produce transformed speech and conduct. Let truth guide your words, love govern your responses, and God's forgiveness shape how you treat others.

👣 TODAY'S STEP

Practise these three things today:

  1. Speak intentionally: Before responding to a difficult message or conversation, pause and consider whether your words are truthful, necessary, and constructive.
  2. Address anger wisely: If you are upset with someone, avoid reacting impulsively. Pray, seek perspective, and take an appropriate step towards resolution.
  3. Extend kindness: Deliberately encourage someone, offer practical help, or take a step towards releasing resentment.

Ask yourself tonight: Did my words today reflect the grace I have received from Christ?

🔥 TONIGHT'S DECLARATION

I declare that my life will reflect the character of Jesus Christ. My mouth will not be an instrument of destruction, but a channel of truth, encouragement, and grace. I will not allow anger, bitterness, malice, or unforgiveness to rule my heart. By the help of the Holy Spirit, I will speak wisely, act kindly, and pursue peace with humility and discernment. As God has forgiven me through Christ, I will extend forgiveness to others. My words will build up, my conduct will honour God, and my relationships will increasingly reflect His love. In Jesus' mighty name. Amen!

🌙 SINCERE MILK — MIDNIGHT CRY

DAY 16: LORD, SET A GUARD OVER MY HEART AND MOUTH!

📖 Scripture Focus: Ephesians 4:29–32

“And be ye kind one to another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, even as God for Christ's sake hath forgiven you.” — Ephesians 4:32 (KJV)

🌌 MIDNIGHT REFLECTION

One careless word can wound a heart, but one gracious word can help restore hope.

As the day comes to an end, it is worth examining not only what we accomplished but also how we treated the people God placed around us.

Did our words encourage or discourage? Did we respond to disagreement with patience or hostility? Did we seek understanding, or were we more interested in proving ourselves right?

These questions are not intended to produce condemnation. They invite honest reflection and spiritual growth.

In Ephesians 4:29–32, Paul shows us that the Christian life must influence our speech, emotions, and relationships. We are called to put away bitterness, wrath, anger, clamour, evil speaking, and malice. In their place, we must cultivate kindness, tenderheartedness, and forgiveness.

This is not always easy.

Sometimes, the people who hurt us are those we trusted most. Sometimes, an apology never comes. Sometimes, a painful memory returns even after we have made a sincere decision to forgive.

In such moments, we need God's grace.

Forgiveness may be a process rather than a single emotional experience. It can involve repeatedly bringing our pain before God, refusing to nurture revenge, seeking wise counsel, and establishing appropriate boundaries. We can forgive without pretending that the harm was acceptable or placing ourselves in danger.

Likewise, controlling our speech does not mean remaining silent in the face of abuse or injustice. There are times when speaking up, seeking help, and reporting wrongdoing are necessary and wise.

The goal is not to suppress truth but to express it in a manner consistent with God's wisdom and character.

Tonight, ask the Lord to examine your heart. If you have wounded someone through careless words, ask for humility to acknowledge it and, where appropriate, make amends. If someone has wounded you, ask God to help you process the pain without allowing bitterness to define your life.

Remember that the grace you need to extend to others is the same grace you continually receive from Christ.

You cannot always control what others say or do, but with God's help, you can learn to govern your response.

Let this midnight prayer become an invitation to surrender your anger, renew your commitment to truth, and allow the Holy Spirit to shape your words and attitudes.
