📅 DAY 20 — OCTOBER 20
STANDING STRONG IN THE LORD
📖 Bible Reading: Ephesians 6:1–9
Key Verse:
“And whatsoever ye do, do it heartily, as to the Lord, and not unto men.” — Colossians 3:23 (KJV)
🌅 TODAY'S DEVOTIONAL
Your everyday responsibilities are opportunities to honour God.
Many people imagine that serving God means doing something extraordinary—preaching to thousands, leading a congregation, becoming widely recognised, or accomplishing something remarkable in public.
Yet much of our Christian life is lived in ordinary places: at home, in the classroom, at work, in the church community, and in our interactions with people who may never recognise our efforts.
In Ephesians 6:1–9, Paul addresses relationships between children and parents, and between servants and masters in the social context of his time. His teaching brings everyday responsibilities under the authority of Christ.
The central lesson is powerful: our faith should influence not only what we do in worship but also how we fulfil our responsibilities and treat other people.
1. HONOUR GOD THROUGH OBEDIENCE AND RESPECT
Paul begins by addressing children:
“Children, obey your parents in the Lord: for this is right.” — Ephesians 6:1 (KJV)
He then reminds them of the commandment to honour their father and mother.
Honouring parents involves more than speaking politely. It includes recognising their place in our lives, listening to wise guidance, expressing gratitude, and treating them with dignity.
Of course, honour does not mean that parents are always right or that children must obey instructions that require them to do something sinful or unsafe. Respect and discernment can coexist.
The principle extends beyond childhood. Adults can honour their parents through thoughtful communication, practical support where possible, and a willingness to treat them with dignity even when disagreements arise.
Our relationships with those who have cared for us can become opportunities to demonstrate the grace of Christ.
2. PARENT WITH LOVE, NOT PROVOCATION
Paul also addresses fathers:
“And, ye fathers, provoke not your children to wrath: but bring them up in the nurture and admonition of the Lord.” — Ephesians 6:4 (KJV)
This instruction places responsibility on parents to consider how their words and actions affect their children.
Children need guidance, discipline, correction, and boundaries. But they also need affection, encouragement, patience, and the assurance that they are loved.
Harshness, humiliation, inconsistency, and unreasonable demands can damage a child's confidence and relationship with a parent.
Godly parenting seeks to develop character without crushing a child's spirit.
It involves correcting wrongdoing while preserving dignity, setting clear expectations while listening carefully, and modelling the values parents hope to teach.
Parents must also be willing to apologise when they are wrong. Such humility does not weaken parental authority; it demonstrates integrity.
The goal of godly parenting is not merely to produce obedient children, but to nurture people who learn to live with wisdom, faith, and responsibility.
3. WORK WITH SINCERITY, EVEN WHEN NOBODY IS WATCHING
Paul's instructions concerning servants and masters reflect the social structures of the ancient Roman world. These verses should not be used to justify slavery, exploitation, or the denial of human dignity.
Their enduring ethical challenge is that our work and service should be shaped by our accountability to Christ.
Paul urges those serving others to act sincerely rather than merely performing for human approval.
This principle speaks directly to modern workplaces, educational settings, ministry, and everyday responsibilities.
Do you give your best only when someone is watching? Do you become careless when supervision is absent? Do you treat responsibilities as burdens to escape rather than opportunities to practise faithfulness?
A Christian student honours God through honest study. A worker honours God through integrity and diligence. A minister honours God by serving people faithfully rather than using ministry to pursue personal recognition.
Your work may seem ordinary to others, but it can still be meaningful when carried out with sincerity and responsibility.
4. REMEMBER THAT GOD SHOWS NO PARTIALITY
Paul also warns those in positions of authority against threatening or mistreating those under them. He reminds them that both servants and masters answer to the same heavenly Master.
This is an important challenge to anyone who exercises power.
Whether you are a parent, supervisor, employer, teacher, pastor, or community leader, your position does not make you superior in human worth or exempt you from accountability.
Authority should be exercised responsibly, fairly, and with respect for others.
A leader who demands honesty must practise honesty. A parent who expects respect must also show respect. An employer who expects diligence should treat workers justly.
Christian leadership is not an invitation to dominate people. It is a responsibility to serve faithfully under God's authority.
The way you treat people with less power reveals much about your understanding of God's authority.
5. SERVE THE LORD IN EVERY SEASON
The unifying principle in today's reading is that ordinary duties can become expressions of devotion to God.
You do not need a public platform to demonstrate faithfulness. You do not need applause to serve sincerely. You do not need to be famous to make a meaningful contribution.
Sometimes, honouring God means completing an assignment honestly, caring for a family member patiently, fulfilling a promise, helping a colleague, or admitting a mistake.
There may be seasons when your efforts go unnoticed. There may be moments when people misunderstand your intentions or fail to appreciate your contribution.
Continue to act with integrity, while also recognising that healthy work environments, fair treatment, and reasonable boundaries matter.
Your value does not depend on how much others praise you.
Dear friend, whatever responsibilities God has placed before you today, approach them with sincerity.
Do them wisely. Do them faithfully. Treat people with dignity. And remember that your ultimate accountability is to the Lord.
You can worship God through the way you live, work, lead, learn, and serve.
🙏 PRAYER FOR TODAY
Heavenly Father, thank You for the responsibilities, relationships, and opportunities You have entrusted to me.
Teach me to honour You in the ordinary details of life. Help me to fulfil my duties with sincerity, diligence, humility, and integrity.
Lord, strengthen family relationships. Teach children to show appropriate respect to their parents, and help parents nurture their children with patience, wisdom, discipline, and love.
Give me grace to work honestly, study faithfully, and serve others without constantly seeking recognition. Deliver me from laziness, dishonesty, resentment, and the temptation to perform only when people are watching.
Father, guide everyone who exercises authority. Help parents, employers, teachers, pastors, and leaders to act fairly and treat those entrusted to their care with dignity.
Where I have misused my position or neglected my responsibilities, give me humility to acknowledge my failures and make appropriate changes.
May my life reflect the character of Jesus Christ in my family, workplace, studies, ministry, and community.
In Jesus' mighty name. Amen.
💡 TODAY'S TRUTH
Everyday responsibilities can become acts of worship when you fulfil them with sincerity, integrity, and reverence for Christ.
👣 TODAY'S STEP
Choose one responsibility you might otherwise approach carelessly and complete it with deliberate attention and sincerity.
Then take one additional step:
- In your family: Show appreciation or offer practical help.
- At work or in your studies: Complete a task honestly and diligently.
- In leadership: Listen to someone you supervise and consider their concerns fairly.
- In ministry: Serve faithfully without depending on public recognition.
Ask yourself tonight: Would the way I fulfilled my responsibilities today honour the Lord, even if nobody praised me?

🌙 SINCERE MILK — MIDNIGHT CRY
DAY 20: LORD, MAKE ME FAITHFUL IN THE LITTLE THINGS!
📖 Scripture Focus: Ephesians 6:6–8
“With good will doing service, as to the Lord, and not to men.” — Ephesians 6:7 (KJV)
🌌 MIDNIGHT REFLECTION
Faithfulness is often revealed in what we do when there is no applause, no immediate reward, and nobody watching.
It is easy to work enthusiastically when praise is guaranteed. It is easy to serve when recognition is available. It is more difficult to remain diligent when our efforts seem unnoticed.
Yet the Christian life calls us to a deeper motivation.
In Ephesians 6:1–9, Paul brings family relationships, service, and authority under the lordship of Christ. His instructions remind us that our conduct matters because we ultimately answer to God.
This does not mean that we should accept exploitation or remain silent when treated unjustly. Paul also challenges those in authority to act responsibly, reminding them that they too have a Master in heaven.
The passage therefore calls both those who serve and those who lead to remember their accountability before God.
Tonight, examine your own responsibilities.
Have you been neglecting something important because nobody is checking? Have you become discouraged because your contribution has not been appreciated? Have you treated someone unfairly because you hold a position of authority?
Bring these matters before the Lord.
Ask Him to develop genuine faithfulness in you—not a desire merely to appear responsible, but a sincere commitment to do what is right.
If you are a student, let your study reflect honesty and discipline. If you are employed, approach your duties with integrity. If you lead others, exercise your authority with fairness and humility. If you serve in ministry, remember that people are not instruments for building your reputation.
There may be times when you need to speak up about unfair treatment, request reasonable support, or establish boundaries. Doing so wisely is not a failure of faithfulness.
True faithfulness does not mean doing everything without rest or accepting every demand placed upon you. It means fulfilling your responsibilities honestly while recognising your human limitations and respecting the dignity of others.
Remember, God sees what people overlook. Your quiet acts of kindness, your honest decisions, your patient service, and your willingness to do what is right all matter.
Do not allow a lack of recognition to rob you of the joy of faithful service.
Tonight, surrender your work, family responsibilities, studies, and ministry to God. Ask Him to make you trustworthy in the little things and wise in the greater responsibilities that may come.
